There is a particular kind of magic in spotting a hare in open countryside. One moment it is sitting almost perfectly still among the grasses, long ears raised and senses alert; the next, it is racing across the landscape with astonishing speed and seemingly effortless agility. Lean, long-legged and wonderfully expressive, the hare has been woven into folklore and rural life for centuries. Our Japanese-inspired watercolour design celebrates that familiar yet elusive character, capturing the animal with a lightness and energy that feels entirely appropriate to its restless spirit. Watercolour allows the hare to exist somewhere between detail and suggestion. Delicate strokes pick out its watchful eyes, distinctive ears and fine features, while freer washes of earthy pigment loosen around the fur and edges of the body. There is movement even in the quieter parts of the composition, with splashes and fading brushwork lending the artwork the fleeting quality of a countryside encounter glimpsed for only a few seconds before the animal bounds away.
