There is something wonderfully unapologetic about the honey badger. Curious, resourceful and famously unwilling to be intimidated, this remarkable member of the mustelid family has developed a reputation that extends far beyond its relatively modest size. Beneath that legendary toughness, however, lies an intelligent and highly adaptable wild animal with plenty of character of its own. Our Japanese-inspired watercolour portrait looks beyond the bravado, bringing the honey badger face to face with a softer, more expressive artistic tradition. Framed as a portrait, the design places all the attention on the honey badger's unmistakable features. Dark, watchful eyes and a broad, powerful face emerge through layered washes of pigment, while expressive brushstrokes capture the coarse texture of its fur and the distinctive contrast of its markings. Softer edges gradually dissolve into loose splashes of colour, giving the portrait the feeling of having been painted in a few confident, spontaneous movements. The result is bold and full of personality, but with an unexpected elegance that offers a very different interpretation of an animal usually celebrated for its toughness.
