Few wild animals have learned to live alongside us quite as successfully as the red fox. Equally capable of slipping silently through a woodland at dawn or appearing beneath the glow of a city streetlight after dark, it is an extraordinarily adaptable creature whose intelligence and curiosity have secured it a place in landscapes both wild and surprisingly familiar. Our Japanese-inspired watercolour design celebrates that elusive character, capturing the fox with a warmth and expressiveness befitting an animal that has wandered through our countryside, cities, stories and folklore for generations. The fox's natural palette seems almost made for watercolour. Rich russets and burnt oranges flow into softer washes of cream and earthy brown, while darker brushstrokes bring definition to the alert ears, intelligent eyes and fine features that give the animal so much personality. Around the edges, pigment is allowed to loosen and fade, lending the artwork the fleeting quality of a fox glimpsed for a moment before disappearing through a hedgerow. It's expressive without being overly polished, allowing the unpredictability of the paint to echo something of the wildness of its subject.
